History on the BBC

I have recently received the attached information through the British
Association for Local History about a history season on the BBC. Some of
the events referred to have already taken place but there is much news that
may be of interest.

If you scroll down BBC Learning History Newsletter 1 to pp. 3-4 you will
see, for example, that from 14 July the BBC website will have 14 'Norman
Walks' in various parts of the country which people can download and go and
carry out. Gill Draper of BALH prepared the Kent one with BBC Radio Kent,
which will also do a live broadcast of the walk taking place.

In particular BBC Learning Resources, Eastern Region, is keen to make
contact with key local (or county?) history societies with a view to
'interested parties exploring setting up High Street History projects'. They
are doing this 'in conjunction with the Heritage Lottery Fund, who feel this
topic sits well with their small grant programme for developing community
heritage'.

Three meetings have already been set up with Flitwick, Bedfordshire on July
22nd, Huntingdon in Cambs on July 29th and Chelmsford in Essex on August 2nd
(this tbc). There will probably be a meeting in Norfolk later in August.
'The meetings are open to anyone interested in finding out more, having
discussion and exploring ideas'. And 'once signed up to Hands on History,
partners will be offered on-going opportunities to link their activities to
BBC history programmes via the database and local BBC broadcasting and
online'.

If you yourself are interested in attending or being involved, or can pass
this information onto any active local/county societies, please do so. The
Learning Project Manager, Eastern Region is Madeleine Forrester whose
numbers are 01223 287 106 and 07710 336 404. Email
Madeleine.Forrester at bbc.co.uk. Please copy any direct response to Madeleine
to me so that I know that this email has had an effect.
